Summer Camp – a good time was had by all…

As previously advertised the Company and Senior Sections travelled to a Scout Campsite near Preston, Lancashire, for our summer camp under canvas. Now that we are back in Yorkshire and have been decontaminated, I can report that a good time was had by all, with splendid weather right up until we started striking camp (typical!).

All arrived on Friday morning and we quickly pitched our tents, before the lads went off shooting; apparently the War of the Roses has actually finished and so they had to be content with shooting targets. The evening was spent playing one of a regular number of games of cricket to the commentary of Henry Blofeld, Aggers et al, although it seems they were describing a rather bigger match in Nottingham.

Saturday started late following a wide game the night before, but we headed down to the other end of the campsite for the badger baiting warren, which is a series of tunnels the lads had to get in and out of in the pitch black. I’m fairly sure they all returned, although there were rather a lot of leftovers at tea that night. The rest of the day was spent on the obstacle course, Kieron completing it in an unbelievable 48 seconds, and this was followed by an impressive water fight whilst the rest of us enjoyed Stuart Broad’s hat-trick on the radio.

Another wide game that night, this time close to our own camp fire, meant weary eyes the day after when everyone had to get up slightly earlier to head off into Blackpool. It was an overcast day, and very very muggy; the lads went off to do what lads do (i.e. amusement arcades and eating), whilst we tried to find a coffee (and managed only a cup of instant – not good). More of the same followed a fish and chip lunch on the promenade (most of the which was being dug up – top stuff in the summer season, not!).

So Monday began, following another late night wide game, and it was a real struggle getting up. Gobbling the sausages and bacon the lads went to do archery in the woods, before coming back and starting to strike camp. This took ages, and it began to rain, and rain, and rain. Ho hum!

Anyway, overall we really enjoyed the new site – it was smaller and more peaceful than the much bigger Walesby, but we’ll definitely go again. Remember to check out the camp gallery for all the pictures we took.
